Police commissioner at wit's end

IN an open letter to Queensland drivers, the state’s top police officer yesterday voiced a concern like a man at his wit’s end.

In a desperate pre-Christmas plea to motorists, Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson asked why 309 people have died on the state’s roads and why drivers make conscious decisions every day to risk their lives, and the lives of their loved ones.

He made no apology for ordering tougher enforcement of the road rules and warned communities that police would be doing everything in their power to make drivers slow down these holidays.

Gympie Police Sergeant Mick Curran reinforced the message and said Gympie police officers would be out in full force this festive season, not just on the main roads, but at holiday locations as well.

He said seatbelts, speeding, tiredness and drink-driving were the main killers on our roads, and these were the ‘fatal four’ officers would be targeting.

Well now, It must be pretty obvious that with all the fines, all the radars and all the threats of punishment on tv, that their strategy isn't working. With all the traffic on the roads these days, someone at some stage will make a mistake and a fatality will occur regardless of how many police are hiding behind radar guns.

Maybe part of the solution is that unlike years ago when there was a police presence on our roads, we now rely on a sporadic police blitz on the odd occasion which really does nothing except collect revenue and inconvenience innocent drivers.

Get back out there you guys and pull drivers over and fine them on the spot instead of leaving it for 2 weeks to inform the driver that he has done something wrong.
