Council can't stop marina plan

GYMPIE Regional Council and the Tin Can Bay community are powerless to stop a new marina development at Norman Point.
Craig Warhurst

GYMPIE Regional Council and the Tin Can Bay community are powerless to stop a new marina development at Norman Point.

The application for the Seymour Group's Fraser Straits Marina has entered the assessment stage through Gympie Regional Council and council has advertised the development notification and called for submissions as of Thursday.

Council's Planning and Development chairman Cr Ian Petersen said the developers of the marina had responded to council's request for more information and as the assessment manager of the marina, council was in a very awkward position.

“We only have jurisdiction over 20m of boardwalk and a small section of rock retaining wall,” he said.

It appears the State Government controls what happens in Snapper Creek and if council can't find any reason to knock back the application, relating to the rock wall and board walk, under the integrated planning act the hopes of various community groups such as Save our Shores (SOS) to stop the marina lie in the hands of the Federal Government.

Under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act the Federal Government needs to sign off on the project.

Cr Petersen said if enough people exerted enough influence on the Federal Government they could potentially heed the environmental concerns raised over the marina.

SOS president Ian Donald said he hoped the EPBC Act stood up for Tin Can Bay.

He said the dolphins, dugongs and migratory birds in the surrounding RAMSAR wetlands would be affected.

“Everyone who is rate payer will be paying for it,” he said as local roads will be used to transport sewage and dredge material.

“I would love to see council coming in, even on a personal level opposing it.”

He said the Seymour group had been deceptive in the past with some of their dealings and were keeping a local business from speaking out about the marina by threatening their lease.

Cr Petersen said there had been an enormous amount of objections to the marina although council couldn't take them into consideration only assessing the rock wall and board walk.

He said if council said no then the applicants could take them to court and “we wouldn't have a leg to stand on” potentially blowing a lot of rate payers' money trying to defend the un-defendable.

I am a reasonably long term resident of Tin Can Bay & I am NOT in favour of this marina. I am also a member of SOS and the Chamber of Commerce. Last week end I was at the Dragon Boat Regatta & the venue for this carnival was fantastic. Not only will the dragon boaters be affected, but also Sailability & the Yacht Club will also lose our very beautiful waterway. Every where one goes these days very little natural beauty remains. Keep Schnapper Creek natural.

I really can't understand what is so hard for the governments to see the damage they always do by building all these things on the shore line. When a good cyclone or high tides come they will be the first to whinge about erosion. I have seen things all up and down the coast. And surely this will not be good for the reef as well. The sea creatures that will be harmed is countless but all they see are dollar signs. Tin Can bay is a beautiful place where families can go and have fun with out spending a fortune. We really don't want another Gold Coast here these places are for the well off and the average person always gets left behind. What about the environmental issues as well? We know about these people in parliament who say they are for the environment then we find out that they helped push something bad through. When will people leave our world alone and LOVE it for all the beautiful things we have.

What will this Marina do for Tin Can Bay. Stop junior sailing. Stop disability sailing. Stop Dragon boat competition and safe paddling area. Stop the Dolphin feeding. Stop safe entry and exit to the creek and ramp. Take away a wonderful amenity for the local people. Allow a big increase in the number of large semi -planing power boats power boats to injure our wonderful Dugongs,Turtles and Dolplins in the narrow waterways. All lost just to park boats for people who do not live here.

I am not against reasonable development of Tin Can Bay, but as a Yacht owner I am very aware that the proposed Marina is not user driven by members of this community. The statistics quoted by Qld Transport to substantiate the need for marina berths is based on boat registrations within the region, and does not clarify type of boat registration. The growth of boat registrations is clearly in the area of trailerable boats, which can be evidenced by boat ramp traffic, whilst non trailerable boat proliferation can be identified by slow take up rates at the existing Marina, requiring discounting by competent management to achieve reasonable occupancy. I believe that the current needs of the region are well served at present, and currently approved expansion of the existing Marina will more than adequately cater for the medium term future. I cannot support the "Build it and they will come" mindset, which will profit only the developers of this proposed monstrocity, and can only have negative impact on this community.

I have operated displacement small craft out of Tin Can Bay for 20 years, and have cherished this haven for dugong, turtle, dolphin and diverse bird life, it being such a contrast to my previous experiences on the Gold Coast waterways.

I am astounded that this giant marina proposal has been given any consideration at all by various State Government Departments, and Local Government Authorities, bearing in mind the limited carrying capacity of our restricted waterway, in particular the Snapper Creek area. Any boat user in the creek will already attest to the congestion and risk of collision on any weekend given reasonable weather. Throw in hundreds more large craft (drawn from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Gold Coast) and it will be chaos and an accident waiting to happen.

Please let sanity prevail, and preserve our still largely pristine waterways for the future generations.

We live in a very special place, and its important that we preserve its natural state. We do not need another Marina particularly in the proposed position. Its about time that the wants of this community and any other for that matter is recognised by council and governments alike. THE PEOPLE OF THIS TOWN OVERWELMINGLY DO NOT WANT THIS MARINA, REGARDLESS OF THE COUNCILS POSTION THEY SHOULD STAND UP AND BACK THE COMMUNITY BY STATING SO, OUT LOUD ! WE ARE PROUD OF WHAT WE
" DONT HAVE " SOMETHING THAT OTHER COMMUNITIES ARE STARTING TO REALISE. STAND UP AND BE COUNTED.
MAYBE THE GYMPIE TIMES SHOULD ORGANISE A PUBLIC RALLEY ON THE SAND WHERE THE MARINNA IS SUPPOSED TO GO LETS FILL IT WITH AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TAKE AN AERIAL PHOTO AND MAKE SURE IT HITS EVERY POSSIBLE FRONT PAGE OF EVERY POSSIBLE PAPER. TV, FISHING MAGAZINES ETC ETC .

Ahh. I just love it when the Queensland anti development crew are in full flight. Grow up & realise that change is a part of life.

Not a problem with change if it is what the people want but 96% of Tin Can Bay residents don't want another marina. From a survey done at the boat ramp over a week period 100% opposed and 100% would not use a new marina. Anyone who cared about what we have at Tin Can Bay at present and the environment we have, recognised world wide, would see no logic in one company having total control over the whole of Snapper Ck. To have council not represent it's rate payers when there is almost total opposition to the marina is a disgrace.
We have a unique environment and a lot of visitors to see it and the wildlife, not just the dolphins. Who in their right mind would want a marina employing 4 or 5 people and see tourism go, in it's place more polution, higher rates, and environmental vandalism. Anyone wanting a marina berth can easily have one at the under capacity marina already here. Why another marina? This smells as bad as the reclamation area will at the new marina unless it is stopped by people power, it happened in Lake Macquarie NSW and should happen here.

Watch the media Ballard, the date is August 8th (Saturday) for an all day passive protest. The date has yet to be confirmed but should be right. Something very interesting to happen and should draw media attention to Tin Can Bay. If we locals don't fight to keep our environment that we moved here to enjoy then we have nobody else to blame but ourselves.

We enjoy the foreshore every day and all it has to offer. For this to be taken away from us is a crime and unacceptable. The natural beauty and wildlife of our coastline should be protected now, and for generations to come. please listen to the locals and fight for our cause. Thank you.
