Wife, child first to come upon crash that killed man

A MUNDUBBERA man's family is devastated after his wife and child came upon the crash that killed him near Gympie at the weekend.

Gympie police yesterday said the man, 58, apparently lost control of his 2012 Toyota Hilux utility as he travelled east on the Wide Bay Hwy, near Bells Bridge.

The vehicle ran off the road for no apparent reason about 1.40pm and overturned, causing fatal injuries.

The crash happened about 300m from the Hayes Rd intersection with the highway.

Tragically, the man's wife and a child were following a short distance behind, police said.

Police issued a plea to drivers to keep themselves and their families alive this Christmas-New Year holiday period.

Gympie district police will be out in force, backed up by officers from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane in a campaign to limit death or injury over Christmas-New Year.
