Region gets Telstra 'top hat' with big broadband roll-out

MORE Gympie households and businesses now have fast, fixed-line broadband after Telstra completed the roll-out of eight "top hats" in this area.

Telstra Country Wide area general manager for the Sunshine Coast, Kris Carver, said Telstra had integrated new technology, referred to as "top hats", into the existing street cabinets to allow more access to internet services for local residents and businesses.

"The 'top hat' is an innovative way of deploying ADSL2+ equipment on top of an existing street side cabinet which provides telecommunications services. In the past year we've installed eight of these across Gympie representing a significant investment in the area," said Mr Carver,

"The upgrade supports our customers who want a connected home experience and will help them to connect up devices such as TVs, computers, smartphones and tablets. It will enable our customers to access Foxtel on T-Box and have better access to a range of BigPond content, movies and channels.

"We can also arrange for one of our T-Plus service technicians to come into customers homes and professionally set all these devices up."

Until now these existing cabinets have not been able to support ADSL2+ technology due to physical constraints. Innovative engineering has overcome this limitation to enable the provision of contemporary broadband technology to more Australians.

The installation of "top hats" in Gympie is part of a nationwide infrastructure investment across the country as Telstra continues to invest in innovative communications solutions to bring faster broadband speeds and improved technology where possible.
