USQ rugby coach looking forward to resuming his role

GREG Convery had a small taste of Darling Downs rugby last season and enjoyed the experience.

His stint as coach of defending Risdon Cup premiers USQ ended earlier than planned but that has only acted as motivation for him to return to some unfinished business in 2013.

Convery has agreed to coach Saints this season in what shapes as a busy year for the well-travelled school sport head and former Sydney grade player.

Convery has also taken up the position this year as The Glennie School's head of sport.

"It will be a bit of a juggle combining the two jobs, but it's a challenge I'm looking forward to," Convery said this week.

"My commitments at Glennie will always come first and USQ are understanding of that.

"Paul Hanna (USQ president) said the club is happy to work in with me, especially on our four big away trips during the year."

Convery began his rugby playing days at St Patrick's Goulburn.

"I began playing junior rep rugby at St Pat's around the same time as blokes like Ben Tune, Joe Roff and Matt Rogers," Convery said.

Convery was a member of the junior Waratah program and also played with the Sydney University club.

He began coaching when injury ended his playing days during his third year at Sydney Uni.

"The last year I played was 1997 but once I stopped playing I more or less went got into coaching straight away," Convery said.

Convery was based and coaching rugby at Warwick's Scots College for 5½ years and Townsville Grammar School before arriving in Toowoomba.

He took over the reins at USQ last season from Gary Briscoe who had left the club because of work commitments.

Convery stood down from the job mid-season for family reasons and Briscoe resumed the role.

USQ went on to make last season's preliminary final where they were beaten by Bears.

"I coached Uni for the first half of last season and when I stepped down it left me feeling that my job was only half done at that time," Convery said.

"That's why I'm keen to be going back to the club this year.

"I'm excited about the year ahead and the pre-season starting on March 5.

"It seemed to take us until about round five last year before the team started hitting its straps and our build up to the competition start on April 6 promises to be a better one this season."
