UPDATE 6.30PM: Grieving Silcox family members have spoken of their shock at the sudden loss of 14-year-old Ophelia in a tragic car crash.

Dad Russell, mum Terri and sisters Elizabeth, 18, and Curtsie, 15, gathered at their rural Gundiah home to share memories of the youngest family member.

"Ophelia was a bit headstrong, very much a non-conformist," Terri said.

"She was very opinionated."

Ophelia, a passenger in a ute driven by Curtsie, was killed on impact when the vehicle slid off a dirt road and hit a tree at Paterson about lunchtime on Wednesday.

Curtsie suffered minor injuries in the crash, including a bump on the head and a deep cut to her hand that required stitches.

Tributes have flowed on Facebook for the outgoing teenager, including posts by Curtsie, who said "I just miss my little sister so much. I love you Ophelia. R.I.P."

UPDATE NOON: The deputy principal of Aldridge State High School says all students will be offered counselling in the wake of 14-year-old Ophelia Silcox's death.

Aldridge deputy principal Jackson Dodd said a large number of students had organised to attend school today wearing black socks as a mark of respect and remembrance.

"This is a mature response by our student body to a tragic event," he said.

"The accident is a tragic event and a wake-up call to young people about the dangers of motor vehicles and the preciousness of life."

Ophelia was killed when a ute driven by her sister Curtsie, 15, crashed into a tree at Paterson, south-west of Tiaro, about 12.20pm on Wednesday.

Ophelia completed Year 8 and part of Year 9 at the Maryborough school.

Curtsie also attended Aldridge during part of 2012.

The pair have an older sister Elizabeth.

UPDATE 8.30AM: Students at Aldridge State High School in Maryborough will attend school in black socks today in honour of 14-year-old Ophelia Silcox, who was killed in a car crash on Wednesday.

Tributes have been flowing on Facebook for the teenager who died when a ute driven by her 15-year-old sister Curtsie crashed into a tree at Paterson, south-west of Tiaro.

Curtsie and Ophelia, a talented showjumper, are from Gundiah.

They are the daughters of Russell and Terri Silcox who own Annandale Homes in Maryborough.

Curtsie suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to hospital where she remained with her family last night.

Police are still investigating the crash, which has rocked the Fraser Coast community.

Crash a mystery for police

POLICE are trying to unravel the mystery of why a 15-year-old unlicensed driver was behind the wheel of a car which crashed on Wednesday killing her younger sister.

The tragic crash at Miva, south-west of Tiaro, claimed the life of a 14-year-old Paterson girl, named on Facebook on Wednesday night as Ophelia Silcox.

Initially police had reported the girls' ages as 15 and 16.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on Paterson Rd at about 12.25pm after a ute slid on a dirt road and smashed into a tree.

Maryborough District Acting Inspector Troy Pukallus said police believed the two sisters were in a family member's car when the crash occurred.

"Initial investigations suggest the girls were travelling west in a Nissan Navara ute when the driver failed to negotiate a crest in the gravel road," Act Insp Pukallus said.

"It has then lost traction with the road and travelled at a 90-degree angle into a tree coming to rest on the passenger's side.

"Unfortunately a young girl has died at the scene as a result."

The older sister was taken to Gympie Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Act Insp Pukallus said.

"This has been a tragically preventable loss" he said.

"At the moment we put it down to the road conditions and the driver's inexperience.

"This was sadly a poor decision that had a tragic outcome."

Act Insp Pukallus said investigations in to the crash were continuing, though police had not decided if any formal charges would be laid against the 15-year-old girl.
