FORMER Gympie Mayor Ron Dyne passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, surrounded by his family.

His death follows a short and courageous battle with aggressive bowel, liver and pancreatic cancer.

By the time he was diagnosed in the middle of last year the cancer was inoperable. Ron persisted with chemotherapy treatment until the toll on his body became too great.

He was forced to retire as Mayor of the Gympie Regional Council just before Christmas.

His final meeting was a highly emotional day.

Ron was elected to the Kilkivan Shire Council in 2000, becoming mayor in 2004.

New Gympie Mayor Mick Curran said last night the community had lost a remarkable man and a true leader. He extended the council's condolences to Dulcie and her family and offered the council's full support in the days ahead.
