THE State Government has promised to finish rebuilding almost 90km of Gympie's major road network, damaged in this and last year's flood and rain events, by mid-2013.

The state-controlled highways and roads will be fixed under Operation Queenslander, the "largest reconstruction effort in Queensland's history".

In the Gympie region, those include the Kin Kin Rd, Tin Can Bay Rd, Gympie-Brooloo Rd, Kenilworth-Skyring Creek Rd, Kilkivan-Tansey Rd, Rainbow Beach Rd, Gympie-Woolooga Rd, Yabba Creek Rd, Burnett Hwy (Nanango-Goomeri and Goomeri-Gayndah), Wide Bay Hwy and Bunya Hwy (Kingaroy-Goomeri).

Following the 2010/11 summer floods the state-controlled road network in the Gympie/South Burnett was severely damaged.

Urgent repairs were undertaken to return the road network to pre-flooding operational conditions but the focus has now shifted to road reconstruction, a spokesperson for Main Roads said.

This will include road stabilisation, widening, and better reconstruction and bitumen surfacing.

Private contractors will be awarded the job this month.

Traffic disruptions are expected during the program.
