International rally roaring towards the Mary Valley

RALLY: The International Rally of Queensland is coming to the Mary Valley with a round of the FIA Asia Pacific and East Coast Bullbars Australian Rally Championship also on the program.

The event will be held from June 20-21 with the rally beginning on Saturday at Kenilworth. Event spokesperson Chris Nixon said the rally will take place in the Imbil State Forest across a 265km network of dirt roads, finishing near Kandanga.

The rally championships will attract representatives from across the globe including Sweden, New Zealand, New Caledonia, France and others.

Organisers were anticipating around 50 competitors and entries were still open, he said.

"It will be an event that brings a major international sporting event and tourism exposure to the region," Nixon said.

The feature round of the FIA Australian rally championships will be broadcast internationally in more than 115 countries.

It is the only Australian round, with others races held in countries such as Japan, China and Malaysia.

The trophy presentation will be at the Mary Valley Showgrounds, from 2.30pm, on the Sunday.

The organisers are looking at arranging horsemen and women to flank the drivers and their cars as they make their way to the podium.

Mary Valley State College students will be involved in the podium ceremony.

"It will help portray the Australian flavour of the event," Nixon said.

The showgrounds will have a secure rally car parking compound, where competitors will be able to refuel and change tyres overnight.

"The Mary Valley Showgrounds will be the hub of the event over the weekend," Nixon said.

The event would bring prosperity and tourism to Imbil.

"The Mary Valley and Gympie regions are hosting some significant world class competitors."

"The region will have two days to entertain the visiting rally contingent who are staying overnight in Imbil."

Spectators will see the absolute best the world has to offer with a number of exciting spectator points on the course.

Tickets are priced at $30.

More information and tickets are available at the service park, at the Imbil Showgrounds during the event. .
