Newman blamed for Gibson rout

LABOR'S Gympie candidate, Stephen Meredith, yesterday blamed a head-in-the-sand attitude by Premier Campbell Newman for Gympie's lack of parliamentary representation.

"It should never have come to a situation where the Gympie community suffers because the LNP is all about back-stabbing and infighting," he told The Gympie Times.

"My thoughts are with David Gibson and with his family at what must be a very difficult time. I wish him all the best for a full recovery.

"However, for the Gympie community it should never have come to this.

"It's a disgrace that the Premier did not step in to try and fix the situation.

"But we have come to expect that of a Premier who would prefer to keep his head planted firmly in the sand than sort out the entrenched problems in his Cabinet and in his Government, which has delivered nothing for Queensland and nothing for Gympie," he said.

A spokesman for Mr Newman said: "The Premier and the LNP team are busy sorting out the mess left by Mr Meredith's colleagues in the Labor party.

"We're delivering more jobs for Queenslanders, the best elective surgery wait lists in Australia and continue working to lower the cost of living for Gympie families," he said.

LNP state director Matt Dunstan said Mr Gibson, who is on sick leave, retains the support of the party during his recovery.

"We hope he recovers to continue making a strong contribution to the people of his electorate for the remainder of this term of parliament.

"Pre-selection in LNP-held seats will take place later this year but no date has yet been set," he said.
