THE new Gympie Sunshine Mitre 10 being built at the corner of Langton and Brisbane Rds on the southern edge of Gympie will be the biggest of its kind in regional Australia and create 50 jobs.
With a price tag of about $10 million, it is expected to be completed in June and will open to the public by early September.
Gympie Mayor Ron Dyne yesterday congratulated Sunshine Mitre 10 on its investment in Gympie and confidence in the region's economy.
Sunshine Mitre 10 chief executive Darren Jordison said the store would feature a full drive-through facility for trade customers and stock the region's largest range of timber and building materials.
Its retail section will showcase a wide range of retail and DIY hardware, a large nursery and a cafe.
There also will be a dedicated plumbing and kitchen appliance section with showroom and specialised staff.
"The new Gympie store will be the largest in the Sunshine Group and will be fitted out to the very latest shop standards available and a much wider range of merchandise," Mr Jordison said.
"Our goal is simply to make this the best Mitre 10 store in Australia."
Mitre 10 will maintain its presence at Park Tce with trade deliveries continuing from that location.
"However the current Wickham St retail location will be vacated when we move into the new Brisbane Rd site," Mr Jordison said.
The Gympie project follows Sunshine Mitre 10's recent acquisition of Langs Timber and Hardware in Caloundra and Johnsons Mitre 10 in Dalby.
"These are difficult times for retailers, however we have a lot of confidence in the Gympie region and, for our business, this is a time to invest for the future."
