Late night dip leads to full-scale search at Teewah

A YOUNG Easter camper's late night dip became a major Good Friday search and rescue drama for Tin Can Bay Coast Guard, Commander Coleen Johnson said yesterday.

And it turned out to be a better Good Friday than it might have been for the man, 19, who entered the surf at Teewah about 10pm on Thursday and did not return to his campsite.

"We were police-activated at 3.30am," skipper Ian Sutton said yesterday.

"We activated two boats and two crews, the Cooloola Rescue and Rescue II, which was on standby.

"We had about eight volunteers, with our commander Coleen Johnson on radio.

"We left about 4am to search the waters off Teewah. The second crew was ready to relieve us, because these search operations can go on forever," he said.

"Another boat from Noosa came up to join the search as well.

"At about 6am, they told us he'd been found, but they didn't tell us he'd been found alive.

"We thought, 'The poor bugger,' but apparently he had gone to sleep in the dunes and was okay.

"He probably suffered mosquito bites, but that was all," Mr Sutton said.

"It's the kind of false alarm we don't mind, if it means someone's been found safe and sound," Commander Johnson said.

She thanked all the drivers who had supported the organisation's roadside donation drive.

"We did really well," she said, with collection points around the Cooloola Coast and Fraser Island ferries. "We just want to say a big thank you."
