Keeping Gympie's guys looking smart

SUE Heinemann dropped into Gympie yesterday to get a feel for her new work space before she takes over next Tuesday.

The gents hairdressing business has been operated for the past 33 years by Neil Priddy.

Mr Priddy, who is retiring, was happy to introduce Ms Heinemann to a few of his loyal clients at the Condies Arcade barbershop.

Ms Heinemann is looking forward to getting to know her new customers.

Her new venture comes on the heels of a stint relieving at one of Toowoomba's oldest barber shops.

"It's a proper, old-fashioned barber shop like the one in Gympie, which is why I decided to make the move here," Ms Heinemann said.

"I saw the Gympie shop as a great opportunity - it's been here for years and is well established. Barber shops like this rarely come up.

"Roma was similar. It has been there 85 years; the barber there was retiring and he offered it to me.

"I spent five years in Roma before starting my own barbershop from scratch in Charleville.

"It grew into a great business and is still busy."

Ms Heinemann grew up on a western Queensland property and always wanted to get into hairdressing but didn't get the opportunity until after she married and her children grew up.

"I decided then to just do it - 19 years ago," she said.

"I started my apprenticeship in Barcaldine and finished it in Toowoomba and realised I preferred men's hairdressing to women's.

"I just love it. Barbering is simple and easy and I don't like the chemicals you have to work with in hairdressing."

In her spare time, Ms Heinemann loves nothing better than spending time on her Cinnabar property working with her horses.

"I grew up around horses, riding and mustering," she explained.

"I've done a lot of showing over the years - I used to take thoroughbreds off the track and train them for hacking."
