Jabiru engines faced new restrictions even before crash

THE Civil Aviation Safety Authority imposed redrafted restrictions on the use of Jabiru engines, such as that which powered the plane that crashed on Saturday near Woolooga.

The restrictions, imposed in response to a "high and increasing rate of engine failures," included requirements that the aircraft fly only during the day and always in locations where they can glide clear of populous areas.

CASA's new rules, introduced last December, also required that passengers and trainee pilots sign a statement saying they are aware of and accept the risk of engine failure and accept they must have "recently" completed engine failure exercises.
