YEARS of illegal deer hunting on his property drove Widgee landholder Phillip Edward Weiss to breaking point, Gympie Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

Weiss, 53, pleaded guilty to a charge of common assault arising from an April 21 confrontation on Widgee Rd.

The prosecution told the court Weiss used his vehicle to block Widgee Rd, a single-lane dirt road, to confront two men in another vehicle.

Weiss exchanged words with the victim before reaching through the car's window and shaking him, causing whiplash, the court heard.

Magistrate Maxine Baldwin was told the assault had "background". Although some hunters had permission from landowners to hunt deer, Weiss's land was not included in any arrangements.

Despite many complaints to authorities and recording the registration plates of illegal hunters, the problem persisted. Losing cattle and a family dog to the hunting activity further compounded matters, the court heard.

Weiss had recognised the victim as being on the property previously and wanted to confront the problem head-on, the court was told.

Weiss was placed on a $1200 good behaviour bond for six months. No conviction was recorded.
