Crowd cheers on our veterans

GYMPIE set itself a new record yesterday when thousands jammed into Mary St to clap and cheer on the veterans, ex-servicemen and women and widows of international campaigns spanning the past 70-odd years.

A handful of Second World War veterans were still able to make the walk to Memorial Park while others followed in a variety of restored vehicles.

Gympie voted with its feet as the huge crowd was joined by an impressive turnout of school students of all ages, complete with the stirring sounds of some talented and well-drilled school bands, in a parade that took about 20 minutes to wind its way from Smithfield St, into Monkland St and the park.

Cloudy weather helped make it a more comfortable occasion.
