Permits allocated, but no plans for coal seam gas

THERE are no plans by anyone to even look for coal seam gas anywhere in the Gympie Regional Council area, a Mines Department spokesman said.

He was commenting on the huge turnout at Goomboorian Hall last weekend at an information session on possible coal and coal seam gas exploration over a large area from Wolvi to Anderleigh.

Organisers said the Saturday afternoon meeting attracted the biggest crowd to the hall in eight years and the Lock the Gate Alliance's biggest regional community meeting in southern Queensland.

"There are no plans to explore for coal seam gas anywhere within Gympie Region or the Sunshine Coast," the spokesman said.

"There are two granted Exploration Permits for Coal (EPC 967 and EPC 2598) relative to the Goomboorian area.

"However, an EPC does not permit exploration for coal seam gas.

"To explore for coal seam gas, a company would need to apply for, and be granted, an Authority to Prospect (ATP) issued under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004.

Department records show there are no granted ATPs, nor any applications for an ATP, over any land within (that area).

A granted EPC only allows the holder to explore for coal for the purpose of mining it through a mine (allowing an assessment of) "the potential quality and quantity of the resource.

"It does not allow a company to carry out any mining production activities or make permanent changes to the landscape (and it) does not mean there will be coal mine built in the future.

"According to the Queensland Resources Council only a very small percentage of exploration permits ever go on to become a mine."
