RUSSELL De Serio got the present he was after on Christmas Day ... the only problem was ... he had to give it back.

The Gympie fisherman was making the most of the Christmas break dangling a line at his secret spot just inside the Sandy Strait.

He landed an impressive 97cm barramundi but because it's the closed season for the fish, he had to release his catch.

Tony Mills from Gympie Fisherman's Warehouse said a 97cm barramundi was huge for this region.

"Anything around 100cm is a great catch," he said.

"I'd take that present any day."

Mr Mills said it was perfect weather for fishing around the Gympie region at the moment.

Although there was plenty of competition on the water, there was still plenty of fish around including mud crabs and prawns he said.
