Champion win
STEVE Groom was the lucky bidder yesterday during the prime cattle sale at The Gympie Show.
The JBS Dinmore Abattoir buyer has landed himself the show's prime grand champion.
"I buy here every year and support the sale," he said.
Mr Groom said the Murgon Limousin Charolais cross steer had good muscling and finish.
Auctioneer Dan Sullivan said there was strong competition from the producers for the champion.
"It's a good steer," he said.
Mitchell Upton entered the 18-month-old steer, which fetched about $1500 ($2.26/kg).
Mr Groom said it was now destined for the overseas market and would probably end up on Japanese dinner plates.
The prime grand champion has previously been won by Reg Cannon and the Rainbow Beach Sport and Recreation Club.
Kilcoy Pastoral Company's Craig Price was the judge and looked for how the steer carried itself, fat score, muscling and finish.
