Book documents our war history
A NEW book donated to the Gympie Regional Library documents battles in Australian history, right up to modern times.
Gympie Vietnam Veterans Association committee member Ivan Friske said the book, An Atlas of Australia's Wars included information about the conflict in Afghanistan.
"It's an excellent book for anyone researching particular battles," he said.
For 20 years the Vietnam Veterans Association has donated two books to the library on Anzac Day, the other on Remembrance Day.
"It's important so there's an opportunity for members of the public to become more aware of our military history.
"I'd like to thank the Gympie RSL sub-branch. We sourced the book from them."
An Atlas of Australia's Wars relates a story of courage and self-sacrifice to locations around the globe.
It supplies readers with a tangible link between the operations and campaigns described in the text and the actual locations which are clearly illustrated in the accompanying maps on each right-hand page.
Mr Friske officially handed over the Atlas to Gympie Regional Libraries' Client Services librarian Geoff Barlow last week.
The book is the second edition, compiled after the first extensive volume in 2001 by famous war historian Lieutenant-General John Coates and will be available for loan after Anzac Day.
