Accused murderer of baby girl at Gunalda to stand trial

THE mother of a four-week-old baby girl has told her ex-partner's committal hearing in Queensland she saw bruises on her daughter's body the night she died, brisbanetimes.com has reported.

The website reported that Michael John Humphreys was yesterday committed to stand trial for the alleged murder and torture of the baby, who died from blunt force trauma on September 23, 2012.

The baby's mother, Sarah Mooney, told the Brisbane Magistrates Court she noticed bruises while bathing her daughter at home in Gunalda, near Gympie, on the night of her death.

Under cross examination, Ms Mooney agreed she called Humphreys and her mother, who lived with the couple, to come into the room.

"So obviously, in your mind at least, either of them may have known something about it?" defence barrister Mark Green asked.

Ms Mooney replied: "Well any of us three could have, we were the adults in care of her".

The court heard it wasn't the first time Ms Mooney had noticed bruising on her baby. Ms Mooney said about two weeks before her daughter's death, Humphreys had kept the baby home from a trip to a friend's house due to marks on the infant's body.

"Because she had the bruises Michael did not want me to take her to my mate's house," Ms Mooney said.

Ms Mooney said her mother Helen sometimes looked after the baby, but rarely picked her up because of Humphreys' "overprotectiveness" towards the child. After a lengthy investigation, Humphreys was charged with her murder in February last year.

At the end of Tuesday's hearing Magistrate Judy Daley committed Humphreys to stand trial charged with murder, torture, grievous bodily harm, assault with bodily harm and failing to provide the necessities of life.

Humphreys did not enter a plea and will face trial in the Brisbane Supreme Court at a date to be fixed.
